Time passes in seconds, minutes, or months, tethering together scenes that cover a range of events. Memories unfold and can be watched for as long as possible, but blinking skips to the next one. The blinking mechanic aims to give players a level of immersion that can’t be found with a controller or mouse, and it does it so well. It’s a smart idea that works well until it becomes harder to blink, due to the tears that’ll likely roll down your face. Throughout the short and bittersweet tale, interaction can be found by moving your mouse to read sheet music, paint pictures, and speak to your family and friends. And if you don't like the "politics" of the show, then I would simply tell you that this isn't the show for you and you are probably not part of the audience that they are trying to appeal to, as everything "political" that happened in season three I thought was pretty relevant to real life, and didn't go too far away from the theme of the first two seasons. It definitely revolves around football, but is more about the characters and their relationships, and what they go through off the field. If you're looking for a "football show", I would not recommend this for you. They certainly know how to make you want to keep coming back for more and that is definitely true with the season's ending. Although sometimes I might shake my head at some things, the show mostly keeps me engaged throughout every episode, and I would say it is pretty funny for a drama. With all that being said, the show has done a great job building these characters and their relationships over three seasons. But there is a reason why this show is in the Drama genre. that physicians should routinely assess all pregnant women for DV. This show is definitely a teenage soap opera. It's a way of capturing the might of American air power that emerged out of this conflict." 'Letting the maps speak for themselves' "It's meant to convey, quite crudely, only the destruction of this city – and the absolute dominance of the Army Air Forces by the end of firebombing campaign. It shows how the Air Force turned its attention to smaller areas after destroying the larger cities with more military and industrial significance.īeyond that, Fedman thinks it reveals still another transformation when compared with earlier maps, which appear "precise and professional." This is a damage report map of Kofu, assessing the extent to which this small city was decimated. "And I think this map reveals that mentality."But it was a later map the researchers found even more striking. "They did a lot of research into the nature of Japanese urban spaces so they could understand how to best burn them to the ground," Fedman said. They used black to indicate the most flammable areas, which happened to correspond to the most densely populated and working-class neighborhoods of Tokyo, Fedman explained. It shows the extent to which war planners sought out information about the vulnerability and inflammability of Japanese urban spaces. This map was produced by geographers in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the US intelligence agency formed during the war that would become the CIA. Still other maps reveal the extent to which the Air Force went to maximize this destruction. Some of these bombs contained napalm, and others a jellied-petroleum formula. "They lowered their bombing altitude and loaded their B-29s with incendiary bombs, which they released with the hope the fire would grow and spread," he said. The blackened maps would inspire the title of the paper they collaborated on: 'A cartographic fade to black: mapping the destruction of urban Japan during World War II.įrustrated with the results of precision bombing, the US Air Forces turned to a technique that was pioneered by the Allies, especially the British Royal Air Force, over the skies of Germany. Taken together, what these maps reveal is the "shift to the strategic doctrine of area incendiary bombing," he said, pointing out that the black represents "huge areas that were burned to the ground the destruction of entire cities, described by some scholars as urbicide." "What's really intriguing … is how you get from the precise dots of the target maps to these huge swaths of destruction that encompassed whole cities." 'A cartographic fade to black' "We both realized there was a lot more to this story," Fedman said. Karacas quickly wrote back that he, too, was intrigued. He maintains the website, digitizing maps and primary sources to make them publically available.įedman emailed him scans of the target charts, and Dr. So he sought out a leading expert on the Japan air raids: geographer Cary Karacas, a professor in the Department of Political Science, Economics, and Philosophy at The City University of New York in Staten Island. The black mass represents the parts of Tokyo that had been burned to the ground. One such map was of Tokyo in early July, 1945.įedman was struck by the "big black blob overtaking the image," as though a bottle of ink had spilled on it. This gap was thrown into focus by other maps stashed away in the U.S. 'A striking gap between the rhetoric and the reality'Īs Fedman soon discovered, however, "there was a striking gap between the rhetoric and the reality of these bombings." "The idea was to surgically take out only those targets." "It neatly reveals the doctrine of precision bombing - high altitude strategic bombing of military and industrial targets," explained Fedman, a doctoral candidate in history at Stanford who studies Japan's cartographic history. Here's our list of the best broadband providers However, 4G services might come with a less well-equipped router, while routers designed primarily for mobile use might focus more on the compact size and battery life than the connectivity options. The 4G and 5G home routers now have more features than they used to, with some including two or more Gigabit Ethernet ports and 802.11ax Wi-Fi. These are now more widely available than they were even a year ago, although they do come with a price premium and, in some cases, a longer contract.įinally, take a good look at the router you’re getting with your package. That will be fine for work, browsing and music streaming, but if you spend a lot of time watching streaming services or downloading PC and console games, then you need to look for an unlimited package. Typically, 4G and 5G mobile services have a data allowance or usage cap, which may be somewhere between 50GB and 300GB. If 5G isn’t an option for you right now, then it could be later on in the year, so watch this space. Even if you can get some 5G coverage with a 5G phone, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a consistent, fast connection with a 5G mobile broadband package.Īll the same, the situation is improving, despite a slow in rollout caused by the government’s decision to remove Huawei equipment from the 5G networks. The situation with the other networks could well be worse, with less than 10% of an area actually getting 5G coverage in some cases. EE has the largest 5G network, stretching across 125 UK locations, but only a third of the population in each location might be within reach of a 5G signal. With 5G, coverage can be even more patchy. You can now find a decent 4G signal across most of the UK, but the fastest 4G+ or LTE-A services, with speeds of over 40Mbits/sec, still tend to be available in only larger towns and cities, so check the coverage and compare predicted speeds for your location before you sign up. Just bear in mind that, while you might get 4G or even 5G speeds in one place, it doesn’t mean you’ll find them everywhere you go. Yet some of these mobile routers will still run from battery power, meaning you can take your internet with you if you go on holiday or move between two properties. We’re now seeing mobile routers that support the latest 802.11ax (or Wi-Fi 6 standards), so you’re really not getting a second-rate experience in any way. These new home services tend to be more expensive than the old-school mobile broadband options, although they’ll come with a higher monthly data cap – or even unlimited usage. When you can get up to 500Mbits/sec just by slotting in a SIM card, why wait for a supplier to bring a full fibre connection to your home? So far, the limited speeds of 4G services have put such devices in a bit of a niche, but the advent of 5G changes that. Increasingly, though, we’re seeing fully featured designs that do everything you’d expect of a conventional ADSL or fibre router – only using a mobile connection, rather than a fixed line. Aberrant regeneration of cranial nerve III.Dorsal midbrain syndrome (also known as Parinaud Syndrome, sylvian aqueduct syndrome, or pretectal syndrome). In such situations, the pupils will not be small and will not show iris abnormalities or irregularity. Afferent light-near dissociation due to optic nerve or severe retinal disease.Differential diagnosisĪlthough AR pupils are strongly associated with neurosyphilis, diagnoses for similar representations of light-near dissociation should also be considered : All patients with bilateral tonic pupils should be considered for serologic testing for syphilis. It is important to check patient history for diabetes mellitus, trauma, and other neurologic diseases. Additionally, the pupils will demonstrate poor dilation after mydriatic eyedrop administration. Slit lamp examination often shows portions iris atrophy along with transillumination defects. Over time, AR pupils eventually lose their near constriction as well and become miotic and immobile. This light-near dissociation is bilateral in 80-90% of patients, but both pupillary size and degree of light-near dissociation can be asymmetric. However, there is brisk pupillary constriction for accommodation to near targets and brisk redilation after the near reaction, which distinguishes AR pupils from Adie tonic pupils. The pupils also demonstrate minimal or complete absence of pupillary constriction to light stimulation. Upon close examination, the pupils have an irregular shape (oval, egg-shaped, tear shaped, irregularly polygonal, serrated, or eccentric). Patients with AR pupils typically present with miotic pupils (<2mm in diameter) that do not dilate fully in dim light. CausesĪlthough AR pupils are classically associated with neurosyphilis, other AR like pupils can occur in the setting of diabetes mellitus, neurosarcoidosis, chronic alcoholism, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, or herpes zoster. During this period, the pupillary light reactions progress from slow, incomplete constrictions to complete loss of the light reflex. The damaging lesion in AR pupils usually develops over a period of time, sometimes asymmetrically and sometimes at an uneven rate. When this inhibitory pathway is disrupted, parasympathetic neurons of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus that naturally fire at a high rate can lead to sustained pupil contraction by the iris sphincter and cause miosis in AR pupils. Supranuclear adrenergic fibers that inhibit the Edinger-Westphal nucleus are necessary for iris sphincter relaxation and pupil dilation. However, the more ventrally located fibers of the Edinger-Westphal nuclei that control the near reaction are spared. Specifically, a lesion of the dorsal aspect of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus can interrupt the pretectal oculomotor light reflex fibers. Bilateral tonic pupils are more frequently to be encountered than AR pupils in the modern era.ĭamage to the rostral midbrain can result in AR pupils. As the prevalence of syphilis has decreased to 2.1 per 100,000 population in the year 2000, the percentage of non-syphilitic AR pupil findings have increased. However, with the efficacy of penicillin therapy, the incidence of tertiary syphilis has decreased, and AR pupils have become quite rare in the United States. EpidemiologyĪR pupils were originally described with neurosyphilis and the finding became a characteristic clinical sign for the disease. Douglas Moray Cooper Lamb Argyll Robertson, a Scottish ophthalmologist and surgeon, originally described this abnormal pupil finding in 1868. In addition, AR pupils are accompanied with frequent iris atrophy. The characteristic light-near dissociation of AR pupils occurs most often bilaterally but may be unilateral in some patients. The pupils are noticeably able to accommodate to near targets, with subsequent normal and brisk redilation to far. The affected pupils initially appear small, and are irregular, but as opposed to the tonic pupil do not maintain increased tone to near targets. Argyll Robertson (AR) pupils, are characterized by small and irregular pupils that have little to no constriction to light but constricts briskly to near targets (light-near dissociation). ![]() ![]() But this is really a completely different (and advanced option) where I could start small and build into full blown productions with a cover band. I was also interested in that beat buddy pedal based drum machine but I still don't think it's out yet. I have always tried to leverage FX and some looping (from the AxeFX II or G3X) to take my game to a higher level. I think I could try it at acoustic shows. I will need to really think things through and I'm considering flushing out the gear to make it happen, but slowly at first. I'm starting to understand it conceptually and putting into some practice. That is crazy trigging lighting changes as well! Sventvkg I'd love to see some type of rig rundown or even a live clip of your band using all of this together LIVE. But probably best to have a better suited multiple I/O interface if I'm going to get into that. ![]() There may even be a way to route the vocals into Mainstage for additional processing. I guess I could do this manually at an acoustic gig for starters. The only issue would be routing of the click (I could try and work around that) and starts and stops of songs in mainstage. all being routed through mainstage and the MAC TO/FROM the ZED which I use anyway. Then instead of having to loop on the G3X in realtime I could actually build songs/sets with percussion, pads, extra guitar, etc. I might be able to leave the G3X in the bag and plug acoustic into the ZED, get some cool sounding patches using SGear and built in stuff in Mainstage. I have an acoustic show on Friday, I'm already wondering how to build a rig to get my feet wet. It should also have multiple dedicated outs so for example the click could be routed to a dedicated output and possibly even a dense mix (percussion, bass, softsynths) could have dedicated outs which would run to an upstream FOH mixer? So I need to figure out how I want to control everything (I need a midi keyboard controller for recording anyway) and I'm thinking the interface IN/OUT of the Mac should have 5 pin midi I/O for use with a foot controller. I had a Presonus 16.0.2 which I loved, I bet that would integrate beautifully with this type of setup. I need to map things out but this could be tremendous for stepping this up at cover AND original gigs (including acoustic). I think they also bundle those with Ableton Live Lite and some nice plugins as well. I've seen some cool vids with a guy using Mainstage and a Focusrite. Keep in mind this is using my ZED 10FX which only has a stereo out (L/R) so there are no real options for routing and such, but I'm starting to think this could be an insane rig. so in seconds I'm jamming to the backing tracks (testing mode) and playing SGear in realtime! Mainstage found SGear, my softsynth SynthMasters. I was checking the amp sims (pretty cool) and then I realized for the original recording (in Reaper) my guitars are using SGear so why not try to incorporate both.
